10 Best dog friendly things to do in Portland, Oregon
If there’s one thing Oregonians love, it’s our canines. These furry, four-legged friends of ours are full-fledged members of the family, and we love to bring them along on family adventures. So if you’re planning a dog-friendly vacation, Portland, Oregon is the place to go.
As a long time dog mom and Portland resident, I’ve come together with other dog-loving travelers to bring you the best dog friendly things to do in Portland.
Restaurants, Cafes & Beer Halls
The Tin Shed
The Tin Shed is one of the most dog-friendly restaurants around. They really cater to their canine clientele and their clientele’s dog-loving humans. It has a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere and friendly service.
Known for its hearty brunch menu, they do serve burgers and sandwiches as well. Their breakfast scrambles have cute names like “fetch” and “rollover.” And dogs can choose from “Fido food” or “doggie dessert” off the “Puppy menu.”
They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Note that dogs are only allowed in the outdoor seating area. However, the outdoor seating is comfortable all year round. It’s covered overhead to protect from the elements, and a fireplace sits at one end to bring warmth on cold days.
Be sure to make your reservation online in advance to ensure you get the seating you want and to avoid lines.
Lucky Labrador Beer Hall
Lucky Labrador Beer Hall is a dog-loving brewpub in Portland, Oregon. It’s a great place to sit down and enjoy a carefree evening with friends, family, and pets. The pub has a casual and relaxing environment. There are a variety of beers on tap, including some incredible in-house craft beers.
Lucky Labrador Beer Hall has rustic decor. There is an indoor seating area and a large outdoor patio where dogs are allowed to accompany their owners. Large dog portraits and beer memorabilia adorns the walls.
The patio is always equipped with clean water bowls. You can also browse their retail store to pick up some dog-friendly merchandise, such as dog toys, bandanas, leashes, etc. The pub also hosts dog-related events throughout the year, such as adoption drives and fundraisers. It’s a great place to enjoy your pet’s company and mingle with other pet parents over beer and bar food.

Dutch Bros
Dutch Bros is a well loved and cherished Oregon-based drive-through coffee shop. It began as a humble pushcart in 1992 in Grants Pass, Oregon, before growing to be the franchise it is today. It now reaches as far east as Tennessee, and many Dutch Bros customers are diehard fans.
But did you know about their secret menu item for our furry friends? They offer a Pupperccino, which is basically a doggie biscuit topped with whipped cream. Their dog-friendly menu makes Dutch Bros the perfect way for you and your dog to start your day together.
Parks and Gardens
Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden
Portland is full of beautiful parks and gardens. One excellent, dog friendly garden to visit is the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, located just minutes from downtown Portland.
The garden covers nearly ten acres of winding paved and gravel trails, twisting through 2,500 colorful rhododendrons, azaleas, and companion plants. Enjoy a peaceful stroll here with your pup past pond, fountain, and waterfall, across a bridge, and through shaded paths.
Or find a bench to rest on while watching the wildlife that call this beautiful garden home. Over 90 species of birds live here, as well as coyote, beaver, and river otters.
Open seven days a week, admission is just $5. The garden only asks to keep your pup on leash and to clean up after them as needed.
TIP: Parking is very limited at the garden, so try to carpool or take public transit as able.
Washington Park
When you want to enjoy nature and stretch your legs with your pup, one of the best places close to downtown Portland, to visit is Washington Park. With over 400 acres of lush forests and gardens, there is no shortage of places to hike or just relax with your furry friend. While visiting, the park does require that dogs remain on a leash at all times.
If you want to hike, you’ll find various hiking trails (both paved and dirt) ranging from about a half mile to over 6 miles — your four-legged friend is allowed on all of them. After the hike, check out one of the most popular gardens in the park, The International Rose Test Garden. Depending on the season, you’ll find over 600 varieties of these fragrant flowers.
The park is also home to the Japanese Garden and Oregon Zoo, but unfortunately, dogs aren’t allowed.
After your adventure, head back into downtown Portland for a bite to eat — if you’re a veggie eater, you’re in luck; Portland is one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the US!

International Rose Test Garden
Another noteworthy and dog-friendly destination is Portland’s renowned International Rose Test Garden. The oldest public rose test garden in the United States, it’s located within Washington Park and covers nearly 7 acres. An astounding 10,000 rose buses and 610 different varieties of roses are on display here.
The best time to catch the roses in bloom is usually between May through October. These gardens are open daily from 5 am to 10 pm, with the exception of every other Wednesday when they open late at 10 am. Admission is free.
Parking at the Rose Test Garden is limited, but the Washington Park shuttle runs every 15 minutes and stops at all of Washington Park’s main attractions.
Hikes and Trails
Forest Park
Forest Park is more forest than park, an absolute outdoor wonderland right in the middle of Portland. It’s one of the biggest urban forests in the United States. That’s 80 miles of trails across 5,200 acres for you and your pup to explore together.
With so many miles to hike, it can be overwhelming deciding where to start, so here’s a few popular choices. A favorite Forest Park destination is to hike the Lower Macleay Trail to the Witch’s Hut. The Witch’s Hut is a small stone house in the forest, now abandoned and covered in graffiti, mystery and intrigue.
Another popular choice is the Wildwood Trail, stretching 30 miles from one end of the park to the other. Although you can hike the entire trail, most people hop on and hike smaller sections of it at a time. It connects to the Audubon Society Sanctuary, Pittock Mansion, and Washington Park.
Forest Park asks we observe a few rules while visiting for the health of the forest. Be sure to keep your pup on a leash. Clean up and pack out any waste. And stick to the trails at all times.
Tryon Creek State Natural Area
Tryon Creek State Natural Area is one of the best places to take your dog for an enjoyable and safe hike. Located just 15 minutes from downtown Portland, Tryon Creek State Natural Area offers more than 650 acres of second-growth forests and 8 miles of hiking trails that include 8 bridges and a boardwalk over a wetland.
Open daily from 7 am until sunset, this amazing natural area can get quite busy so it’s best to go early if you want to avoid the crowds.
Tryon Creek State Natural Area is one of the top day hikes near Seattle with your dog, but there are some rules specifically designed with canine companions in mind. Dogs must be kept on a leash (maximum 6′ leash) at all times while exploring the park and owners must pick up after their pets as well as dispose of any waste in designated trash cans located throughout the area.
The 3.8-mile loop trail is one of my favorite things to do here with my own pup – it takes about 1.5 hours to complete and there are plenty of opportunities for your pup to enjoy as well! From wildlife spotting to swimming in the creek, this trail has something for everyone. So grab your leash and head on over – you won’t regret it!

Spring Water Corridor
If you’re looking for a scenic and dog-friendly outdoor experience in Portland, the Springwater Corridor is a mostly-flat multi-use trail that goes for 21 miles.
Meandering alongside the Willamette River on the paved path, dogs can enjoy the fresh air, exercise, and exploration. You can park in the charming Sellwood neighborhood and head North toward OMSI and the East bank of downtown Portland.
For this trail, dogs must be on a leash at all times to protect the safety and comfort of other trail users as well as wildlife. Also, be aware that cyclists, walkers, joggers, and rollerbladers can all take advantage of the path.
You’ll discover Portland’s lush natural landscapes, peaceful picnic spots, and even access points to the river for a refreshing dip or a game of fetch.
